An Evening of Song

on Wednesday, 19 October 2011. Posted in What's On

St Brendan’s church

Two local singers are staging a concert in Bantry next month. Bridget Nolan, who comes from Allihies, and Bryan Husband, who has recently moved to Dromore, are presenting an ‘Evening of Song’ at St Brendan’s church. The pair gave a similar concert in August as part of the Allihies Music Festival – a concert which sold out, ‘standing room only’!

The date for your diary is Friday 4 th November, at 7.30, and as the concert comprises repertoire covering Irish melodies, classical favourites and numbers from Musicals, it promises to present ‘something for everyone’!

Bridget grew up in County Carlow, but spent a lot of her childhood on the Beara Peninsula, where her mother originated. She has toured extensively all over the world with ‘Rhythm of the Dance’, and has played in many musicals and operas in Ireland. This concert will be one of her last before making the move to London to extend her career there.

Bryan has also spent much of his career abroad – he spent many years singing in continental opera houses, as well as many appearances in London, and on tv and radio. He now spends his working life performing, adjudicating at Music Festivals around the world, examining for Trinity Music Examining Board, and teaching in London. He is soon to begin holding singing workshops in and around the West Cork area. He also works as a ski instructor – if one can refer to this as work!

This ‘Evening of Song’ promises to be an exciting, entertaining occasion, with some surprises. Be sure not to miss this opportunity to see and hear two accomplished local performers in a rare appearance ‘at home’! Tickets are available on the night at the door, and cost €12.

The West Cork Mental Health Forum are delighted to announce that they are hosting an Information Day on Tuesday 4th October 2011; 10.30am – 3pm at the West Cork Hotel, Skibbereen, Co Cork.
The Information day is to highlight the importance of mental health “no health without mental health”. The day will commence with testimonials from SHINE and GROW representatives. SHINE is the national organisation dedicated to upholding the rights and addressing the needs of those affected by enduring mental illness. GROW is an organisation which helps people who have suffered, or are suffering from mental health problems; it’s strength is the support members give to each other.
These inputs will be followed by a Musical Interlude by Acapellabella, the West Cork based World Music Community Choir.
Kahlil Thompson Coyle will then give a presentation on See Change, National Mental Health Stigma Reduction Partnership. The focus of See Change is to bring about positive change in public attitudes and behaviour towards people with mental health problems.
Margaret O’Donovan, Principal Community Worker in West Cork said that she was delighted that over 20 local services were coming together to highlight and showcase the services and supports available to people in West Cork.
The services coming include EmployAbility Service, Citizens Information Service, West Cork Carers, Family Resource Centres, Social and Health Education Project, HSE Mental Health Services and many more.
This FREE event starts at 10.30am and representatives from these organisations will be available to discuss their services and answer queries with anyone who wishes to find out more both before and after the inputs from speakers.

Light refreshments will be available.

The West Cork Mental Health Forum is a network of people interested in mental health issues including service users, carers, professionals, representatives from voluntary and community organisations. WCMHF was established in 2006 and aims to
